ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on tools that address the following three challenges. First, it examines Student's lack of the skills needed to engage successfully in a rigorous contextual scenario. Next, it describes Teacher's challenges with supporting the development of these skills through the use of effective differentiated questioning. Lastly, it explains Student's heavy dependence upon facilitated guidance throughout the logical reasoning process. The Logical Reasoning Process (LRP) involves the three phases students work through when engaging in logical reasoning. Students can be offered some flexibility in how they choose to report their findings and communicate the supporting argument. One possibility is to coordinate with an ELA teacher to do this part since it focuses on decoding informational text and translating questions into written answer statements. The Q-Pyramid is arranged with the LRP graphic organizer serving as the base of the pyramid while the faces correspond to the appropriate opportunities for questioning.
