ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author raises final question to the 20 experts concerned what their ideal future scenario would be for learning analytics and where they would like to see the field developing over the coming years. Dragan Gasevic sees analytics as enabling institutions increasingly to make decisions based on information and for them to develop much better understanding of what processes are driving learning and what kinds of learning strategies are most effective. Kirsty Kitto suggests that research into learning analytics at institutions rarely results in innovations that are usable: PhD students do not get their PhD by solving some small problem that would be really useful to an educator. Simon Buckingham Shum is inspired by the potential linkages between learning analytics and learning design, in particular: His ideal outcome looks much more like intentional learning design to achieve certain outcomes which are gathering data, which will tell us whether those are happening or not.
