ABSTRACT

A theme that emerges from a number of the interviews with experts in learning analytics is that adaptive learning systems and intelligent tutoring will continue to improve and become increasingly important in education. Several of the interviewees were particularly interested in using data to help understand the learning process. Bart Rienties is also interested in using analytics to see how learning design influences student success. He has noticed that the reason for student failure is frequently because something is wrong with the learning design. Jeff Grann, for example, has a background in educational psychology and would like to apply techniques such as psychometrics and item-response theory to provide greater insight into the processes and sequences of human learning. Alyssa Wise suggests better use of analytics for enhancing the learning design of courses: So at the instructor level that means that one wants to have some sort of system set up where there's close ties between learning design and learning analytics.
