Language That Works book
This chapter covers the many dimensions and applications of language, since language, is the primary building block of every speech. Speaking implies communicating and without language, there is no communication. Both the verbal and nonverbal aspects of language are affected. The chapter also covers the nonverbal dimensions of language, especially those that have a direct bearing on public speaking. It describes the major components of nonverbal language and then focuses on those that speakers use most of the time while delivering their message. Too many inexperienced speakers are reluctant to use methods that will up their authenticity and credibility such as modulating the vocalic dimension, varying the rate, and savoring pauses. A successful speaker is able to use voice to emotionally color the ideas captured in the words of the message. The various dimensions work together synergistically, increasing their individual impact, while increasing the perception of immediacy, exciting the audience and delivering a powerful speech.
