ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on work generated by students and the work of students of other faculty similarly attempting to introduce building performance concepts into their design courses, or design problems into their building systems courses, or both. It provides some examples regarding building design. The chapter discusses one student's submission for the first thermal comfort assignment. This student was responding to a design prompt in his studio class for a "building envelope museum", a museum celebrating the design of the building envelope. The chapter explains the critical need for students to develop an understanding of the building envelope while still in school. It presents the winning entry from each of the three competitions along with a review of "teachable moments" when jurors and students had an opportunity to discuss assumptions about suitability, constructability, durability, and code compliance in relation to design intent.
