ABSTRACT

As technology has continued to develop, the role of the modern commercial composer has evolved to include many responsibilities that reach far beyond the duties of past composers. Understanding how music is put together on a page provides fluidity, efficiency, and professionalism to a contemporary composer's workflow. Some composers still prefer to begin with a notated score, while others favor working out their ideas directly into a piece of recording software, which the authors refer to as a digital audio workstation (DAW). A DAW provides an environment designed to consolidate the workflows related to the many stages of production into a single location. The DAW is the central tool for any studio. The introduction of DAWs needed to be as straightforward as possible, allowing professionals the ability to make the change from analog to digital environments seamlessly. Common visualization used in a DAW is the tracks view window.
