Recent Trends in Islam (1958) book
It would be presumptuous to attempt a total assessment of recent de velopments in Islam, for it is not possible to encompass all that pertains to the millions of Moslems living in Asia and Africa. One’s knowledge is, at best, limited, and could, if used to pronounce broad generalisations on Islam today, be dangerously misleading. Islam, to borrow Professor Franz Rosenthal’s phrase, ‘is an eminently historical religion’. It is still making history, and to analyse history in the making is difficult. One may construct theories about the past, but the present impinges on the future, and the theorist, unaware, turns prophet. One may venture merely the formulation of hypotheses regarding current trends in Islam on the basis of recent developments.
