Just before noon one Monday morning in June 1940 Italian aircraft bombed the Iraq Petroleum Company’s Storage Tank Farm in Haifa Bay, Palestine. There were then no anti-aircraft defences in place, and the raid was over in a matter of minutes. One of our neighbours was a charming Muslim lady, living with her daughter. On hearing the deafen ing rumble of bombs dropped from an appreciable height, she grabbed her Koran and dashed out to an olive grove opposite the house, where she proceeded to read — recite — for protection against what she thought was a terrible natural catastrophe. A week later, on a Friday noon, II Duce's airforce was back, this time to bomb other installations in the industrial complex of the Kishon river. As it coincided with the Friday noon prayers at the main mosque in East Haifa, the faithful came out to applaud the Italian raiders, the enemies of their enemies, the British.
