ABSTRACT

Defining music therapy is complex (Bruscia 2014, Kirkland 2013, Pavlicevic 1991, Wigram 2004) because of its affiliation with two opposing disciplines, art and science (Bunt 2015, Bunt and Stige 2014,). Music therapy is concerned with human relationships generated through creativity, most therapists formulating an approach that is relevant to their beliefs and the people with whom they work. Differing theories of music therapy serve to provide the bases from which new, ever-evolving frameworks emerge (Aigen 2014). Definitions are critical in providing credibility for professional status and help clarify the defining principles of an individual or collective. For the most part, music therapy has defined its practice from extramusical theories such as psychology, psychotherapy and medicine.
