ABSTRACT

As I contemplated the first five sessions I began to recognise the unique nature of our musical and therapeutic relationship. My role as therapist, composer and improviser was being tested at every level. I understood that Francis needed to ensure that I could rise to the musical and personal challenges necessary for him to trust the music therapy process. The work was evolving in ways I could never have imagined. Francis’s musical creativity and his ability to translate his feelings into words were indeed astounding. My belief that music within the therapeutic context was a contemplative practice full of emotional and spiritual truths was now becoming a reality. With this realisation and through supervision, the clarity and balance of my roles as musician and therapist were now becoming clearer.
