ABSTRACT
As the Grand Army gathered in Germany for the war against Russia, it became apparent that operations in Spain could no longer be controlled from Imperial Headquarters. Napoleon solved the problem by appointing King Joseph commander-in-chief of all the French armies in Spain, with Marshal Jourdan as his chief of staff.
