ABSTRACT

The skills that young people need to successfully navigate a path to college are the same as the skills they may need to find and keep a good job. Melissa Calabrese has worked with many young people who want to go to college eventually, but find them working to support a family. Being able to communicate with co-workers, having emotional intelligence in the workplace, and being able to use the resources available at work to advance are key challenges that many young people face. Young people looking for a job or a short-term educational opportunity after high school face a different task than students applying to colleges and the universities for a four-year degree. If students are looking for a vocational program, a certificate, an apprenticeship, or a career-focused two-year degree, they are conducting something closer to a job search than a college application process.
