ABSTRACT

Clara met us for her interviews casually but fashionably dressed, and gave us the impression she was a happy, talkative, co-operative student who had a passion for her studies and would have been a pleasure to teach. Clara is Latin American, and as well as speaking English, spoke intermediate-level French. Her English proficiency met the standards her UK social sciences university department required for entry onto its master’s programme. Clara scored a total of 95 on the TOEFL iBT, roughly equivalent to an IELTS band 7 (ETS 2014), performing most strongly on the test’s writing and speaking components. Hence, Clara was not required to take a pre-sessional English course.
