ABSTRACT

Stories are always concerned with the protagonist and antagonist, but there are lots of other characters in a story. This chapter talks about what a supporting character is, why they are important, and the three main categories they fall into as characters. In addition to the classic role that story structure defines for supporting characters and subplots, the Enneagram-Story Connection supplies a strong approach to help the writer define supporting cast members in convincing and consistent ways. By utilizing the Enneagram Wings as resources for character development, the writer can create supporting characters that actually reflect emotional themes and personal reflections of the protagonist, so that rather than feel random and haphazard, supporting cast members will feel organic and built-in.
