ABSTRACT

This chapter breaks down the parts of the Enneagram that writers should be most concerned with. The idea that the Enneagram is an emergent property of being human, as opposed to some “system” created by a guru or expert and externally imposed on human behavior, is explored. The Enneagram as a model is explored: how it can be predictive, describe psychological processes, and evaluate human performance and responses. The model describes the basic tools writers can use in their development: Focus of Attention, Survival Strategy, Image, Core Fear and Poison, Core Desire and Distortion, Parental Matrix, and the Enneagram Wings. All these patterns contribute to the writer’s understanding of the Enneagram-Story Connection and how the Enneagram contributes to developing a fictional story.
