ABSTRACT

In this book, I have so far focused on adults who develop dementia where prior cognitive functioning was intact. This chapter focused on adults born with an intellectual developmental disorder who then develop dementia later in their lives. Life expectancy for people living with these conditions is significantly longer than in the recent past, predominantly due to improvements in healthcare. However, because of this, increasing numbers are subsequently developing dementia. Particular focus will be given to Down’s syndrome. Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment will again be covered, although this time the focus will be on this underrepresented group.
