When a group of facts, theories, myths, and prejudices begin to group together, coalesce, and become a science, there is a great need for a central organizing principle-for some tentative way to assemble data and plan future research. Before such a central paradigm emerges, the science does not exist. But once it appears, the paradigm operates like the core of a crystal and turns an undifferentiated solution of conceptual molecules into an organized solid capable of indefinite growth.
