ABSTRACT

Cooking and nutrition involves learning how to prepare food using the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Practical food preparation, cooking skills and aesthetics of food are key aspects of children's work when designing and making food products. Food education can make a real difference to the quality of people's lives. As teachers, we have a responsibility to ensure that we equip children with the knowledge and skills that they need to make informed decisions about food choices. Food presents people with daily decisions to make and problems to solve, so learning about food should be as practical as possible. D&T lessons should prepare children to be informed citizens who can consider health and life skills in relation to food. Instilling a love of cooking in children will also open a door to one of the great expressions of human creativity. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables children to feed themselves well and affordably.
