ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of technologies in language teacher education, including a discussion of chat, discussion forums, and blogs, in order to outline their affordances for language teachers’ communication, learning, and development. Student and teacher uses of chatrooms, discussion forums, and blogs are offered, exploring areas such as community-building, reflection, collaboration, and mentoring. The discourse of computer-mediated communication is also explored and often compared to face-to-face communication. This chapter also offers a brief discussion of multimodality and multimodal corpora. Selected findings from a corpus-based perspective of online discourse and corpora of computer-mediated communication are also offered.
