ABSTRACT

The importance of visual-motor skill in climbing One of the key challenges of climbing that is common to many other mountaineering activities (e.g. hiking, skiing, paragliding, etc.) is coordinating one’s movements effectively within physically demanding and sometimes extreme environments. Undoubtedly, climbers use a variety of information sources to ‘read’ the environment and support their actions. Such information sources include visual, auditory, tactile, proprioceptive and prior experience. The primary concern for this chapter is how visual information is detected via eye movements before and during a climb.
