ABSTRACT
A pioneer in Black journalism, Robert S. Abbott founded the weekly Chicago Defender in 1905. The newspaper reached a circulation of 230,000 ten years later but suffered heavy losses during the Depression. It became a daily in 1956. Its circulation today is about 20,000.
