In the last years of his life, it seemed that Cardigan had left himself little scope for spurning social morality, or diverting the newspaper public by further improprieties. Yet since the end of the Crimean War, his association with Balaclava had merely eclipsed another area of his life, which was destined to be revealed in a blaze of controversy and gossip.
