ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a new goal-based reading framework called REading as problem SOLVing (RESOLV). RESOLV emphasizes the similarity between the cognitive processes involved in reading and in problem solving. First assumption recognizes that reading is a form of adaptive behavior. A second processing assumption, limited processing resources, acknowledges the fact that human processing resources are limited. The third processing assumption is that readers generally begin a task with a feeling of knowing evaluation (FOKE). The benefit-cost analysis (BCA) assumption is that readers evaluate the physical, cognitive, and emotional cost of a reading action relative to its benefits with respect to achieving a goal, both when selecting that action and during its application. The fifth processing assumption involves decision thresholds. The chapter also presents an overview of the external and internal resources, the cognitive representations that result from the reader's activity, and the reading processes and decisions that allow the construction of these representations.
