ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates on the processing decisions that underlie reading activities in the REading as problem SOLVing (RESOLV) framework. It presents an overview framework for understanding the core processing decisions a reader could engage in, when they might arise, and the factors that can influence them. The chapter discusses the non-routine decisions that help readers get around obstacles and impasses. These include getting, changing, and selecting the two main elements of the Task Model: goals and actions. The limited processing resources assumption states that a reader's active memory and attentional control are limited. The "need external?" decision is an examination of whether information outside the person's memory system is required to complete a targeted goal. The "relevant?" decision can refer to the processing of information activated from memory or any external information such as a Google list of documents or texts as a whole or a particular segment of text.
