ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the difficulties of learning a new language. There are totally five difficulties faced as explained. The first difficulty is one of ear. People are gifted in varying degrees with what is known as an 'ear for speech sounds'. The second difficulty is that of making the speech sounds of the new language. The third difficulty is that of knowing when to use the sounds. The fourth difficulty is concerned with the recognition and acquisition of the correct length of sounds, the distribution of stress, and the intonation of the language. The fifth difficulty is that of fluency, saying the sentences of the new language with sufficient ease and speed. The student is rarely aware of the difficulties which confront him in the study of the spoken language, and if the nature of them is explained, he is in a better position to overcome them.
