ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the Organs of Speech. The students concerned with the pronunciation of a language should know something about the mechanism of speech. A detailed study of the physiology and anatomy of the speech organs is not necessary, but the student should have a clear idea of what the organs are by which speech is produced. The student is advised to make them familiar with the terms used to describe the mechanism of speech and as far as possible to investigate his own speech organs and to try to realize how these are used in making the sounds of his own language. The soft palate is one of the movable organs of speech, and it can take up two positions: Soft Palate raised and lowered. Many African languages contain nasalized vowels, and as it may be necessary for the student to use his soft palate in a way which is not natural to his mother tongue.
