ABSTRACT

Once the Second World War had broken out, and in particular when the Middle East became involved after the fall of France and the entry of Italy on the side of Germany, British policy in Iraq underwent certain changes. We can distinguish two stages in the development of this policy. During the first, the aim was to attach Iraq to Britain's cause bypolitical means, but during the second stage there was a gradual realisation thatmilitary action would be both necessary and possible.
