ABSTRACT

The individual work system provides learners with a systematic way to approach and organise the work and tasks within lessons. It is a strategy that engages learners with ASD by using their strengths and interests, builds independence, and enables them to generalise their skills into other settings. Complementing the schedule, which outlines the sequence of activities that a learner is to follow during the day, the work system tells the learner exactly what tasks he or she is to complete. The work system is an extremely important and effective way of organising individual activities and tasks within lessons, to give learners strategies for completing tasks and an understanding of important concepts related to their work, such as when their work is finished. Work systems are also commonly referred to as ‘activity systems’ or ‘to do lists’.
