ABSTRACT

Visual structure can be used to organise, clarify and differentiate tasks and assignments. It provides learners with information about what is expected, how to complete a task and how to use the required materials. Because visual skills are often especially strong in autism, and generally stronger than receptive language skills, visual information can be very helpful in developing understanding and helping learners to carry out class assignments. If learners are taught to look for visual information in all of their activities, they can use this information to understand and perform their work more effectively. Three kinds of visual information are important: visual clarity, visual organisation and visual instructions.
