ABSTRACT

Working with a difficult infill site, Art Stable creates a sensitive, and well-detailed project for the creation and display of art in a developing neighborhood of Seattle. The creation of street-level retail and gallery spaces below a parking level that accesses an alley that is 16′ 0″ higher than the main level efficiently and elegantly develops the building for live/work artist spaces. The remaining studio spaces on the upper levels of the building provide flexibility for the residents to adapt the floor plate to their needs on an individual basis. The addition of the davit crane and tall hinge not only give the building an industrial look that relates to the history of the neighborhood, it also provides an elegant way to move art in and out of the spaces in the tight infill space in a rapidly growing city.
