ABSTRACT

Inspired by Chinese garden design and nature, the Shanghai Nature Museum is shaped like a nautilus shell and uses that form for the overall building organization. Sustainable features include a green roof, bioclimatic building design, geothermal fields, and placing the majority of the building underground to better protect the sensitive exhibits. An iconic Cell Wall was designed based on organic cells and how they are the building block of nature. Three layers are used to create the Cell Wall and reinforce the ideas of the overall building design being inspired by nature and the structures it creates.
