ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the children play a game that links sound and mathematics. Children could draw their own grids on the playground and repeat the activity, working in smaller groups. Volume and pitch are distinct properties of sound. Volume measures how loud a sound is and is related to the size of the vibration. A larger vibration makes a louder sound and a smaller vibration makes a quieter sound. Pitch measures how high or low a sound is and is related to the speed of vibration. A high-pitched sound is made with a high frequency and one with a low frequency will make a low-pitched sound. If children have designed and made their own musical instruments, they could be challenged to compose a piece of music for their instruments. The challenge is that children should use volume and pitch in their composition.
