ABSTRACT

Making and hanging bird feeders is great fun; it offers the opportunity for children to develop their understanding of seasonal change and what different birds eat across the year. Children carry out a survey of birds visiting the school grounds using binoculars and identification charts or books to name the birds. A bird hide could be created for groups of children to sit in while carrying out the survey. Groups could work on making various kinds of bird feeders including suet and seed balls using websites. Engage children in thinking about what other ways they could encourage different birds into the school grounds, such as creating microhabitats like wildflower areas or planting buddleia for birds to feed on. This chapter contributes to personal development by offering opportunities for children to ask and answer their own questions, developing their confidence and self-esteem in making their own decisions.
