ABSTRACT

Children make different kinds of popcorn feeders to help feed the birds; they compare designs to find out which types the birds like best. Cook some plain popcorn kernels by following the instructions on the packet and allow to cool. Children could compare threaded popcorn with other approaches from their original ideas for example, putting the popcorn into a small bowl, weighted by a stone so it cannot be blown away. Feeding birds throughout the year supports children in deepening their understanding of living things. Elevated trays such as a simple bird table attract a wide variety of seed-eating birds such as pigeons, starlings and house sparrows. Hollow, finer mesh tubes with small perches underneath may attract smaller birds such as sparrows and finches. Children could listen to the song 'Popcorn' by Hot Butter and create a dance routine to the music outside, taking advantage of the freedom that the space offers.
