ABSTRACT

Children find out about different kinds of bird nests, then search for outdoor materials to build their own nest. They choose a place to site the nest and monitor it regularly, recording their observations over time. Many species of birds build nests to lay and incubate their eggs in, and to raise their chicks in. Many birds build a new nest each year. The most familiar design to children is usually the cup nest, named after its shape. Nests are mainly used for breeding, although they may sometimes be used for roosting. Children could present their research as either a fact card or a non-chronological report using appropriate features such as a title, an introductory paragraph and further paragraphs on different aspects of the subject, usually written in the present tense. It illustrations with labels and/or captions, lists of facts in bullet points, technical vocabulary in bold and possibly a glossary at the end.
