ABSTRACT

Children study a poster of the water cycle and use their understanding to model the processes involved in the school grounds on a large scale. In particular, they identify which state of matter they are modelling at any time using movement and a colour-coded object. Earth is covered with water, which is essential for life. The water cycle acts as a natural recycling system and it is driven by the heat energy from the Sun. Water evaporates from lakes, oceans, etc. and is transpired from plants. The water vapour rises into the atmosphere where cooler temperatures cause it to condense into clouds. Precipitation may fall as rain, snow or hail. Some groundwater runs off and flows into rivers; much of it soaks into the ground and replenishes aquifers, which store freshwater. Humans intervene in the natural water cycle to provide the public water supply. Children study how water has been represented by various artists, e.g. Monet, Hokusai, Turner, Hockney, and Escher.
