ABSTRACT

Children collect items from outdoors and use them to classify into different groups; they also identify and name what they have collected. The children use a film canister so that only small objects or materials are taken from the environment, and so that if the work needs to be continued in the classroom, tables are not filled with half of the school grounds. Limiting children also means that they have to observe carefully to find objects and items that fit into the canisters. In this chapter children are grouping, classifying and identifying. Grouping is the process of placing objects into groups, any kind of group of their choice, whereas classification is arranging items according to scientific terms, e.g. animals, plants, waterproof, deciduous, flower. Children could take a photo of their collection and write their story for a class story book or use an Easi Speak microphone to record their story for other children to listen to alongside a photograph.
