ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is for children to create a 'viewing frame' using, e.g., twigs with string, Lego or card, and then choosing a place in the school grounds to observe regularly across the school year. Children sketch or photograph what they observe through their viewing frames, recording their observations in their personal seasonal change diary or on a calendar. Children need to observe change over time, which means that they require access to the outdoors environment on a regular basis. Using a viewing frame helps to focus children's attention on the same area throughout the year and they can record what they observe. Children are given the freedom and responsibility to observe and record what they see through their viewer across the year, and communicate their observations. Children design and make a viewing frame and sketch or draw what they observe, thinking about colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.
