An effective argument essay is not only characterized by the quality of the information the author presents, but also the style the author uses when doing so. Specifi cally, strong argument writers use a formal style consistent with the reader’s expectations for an argument essay. The Common Core Writing Standards highlight the importance of this conceptStandards W.6.1.D, W.7.1.D, and W.8.1.D call for students to “establish and maintain a formal style” in their argument writing (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2010). In this chapter, we’ll explore the following: what “establishing and maintaining a formal style” means, why using this strategy is important to effective argument writing, an example of a lesson that helps students understand this strategy, and key recommendations for helping your students establish and maintain a formal style in their own argument writing. While examining these topics, we’ll take a look at excerpts from argument essays that utilize this writing tool.
