ABSTRACT

Qualia constitute the only reality of which humans have experience all else goes on in the dark of unconsciousness so it would seem perverse to try to deny them that which they are. This chapter focuses on whether any predictions can be made about the likely existence and nature of currently undiscovered types of 'rock', followed by a look at some of the potential implications of the whole picture. The Victorians were especially interested in hypnotism because it was the child of mesmerism, offering hopes of cure, lessons in subjection and a route to achieving apparently paranormal powers of telepathy and clairvoyance. It would involve humans in considerations ranging from psychosomatic medicine to Ganzfield techniques that are best dealt with separately, if at all. Indeed hypnosis seems quite likely that it has primarily to do with unconscious mind, having only secondary consequences for conscious experience. Apparitions are the next topic that interested the Victorians.
