ABSTRACT

Edgard Varèse reminds us that composing electronic music is partly about knowing which buttons to push and when, but also about engaging in the artistic process of creation. Composing electronic music requires, in most cases, fluency with technology and a familiarity with procedures. This can be said for every era of the discipline, from tape composition to voltage-controlled analog synthesis and now computer composition. The laptop computer today is essentially the Swiss Army knife of electronic music, able to facilitate any part of the music-making process.
