ABSTRACT

Over the years, the assess ment of offend ers has evolved from using a “gut feeling” to instru ments that focused on past beha vior (static indic at ors) to what are now called fourth-gener a tion instru ments. The latest instru ments combine static and dynamic factors together to provide a more accur ate predic tion of risk, and they identify the crime-produ cing needs that should be targeted for change in correctional treat ment programs.
