ABSTRACT
The introduction summarizes the main arguments and contributions of this study, and discusses central theoretical and methodological premises. It explains the study's methodological reliance on novels; the meaning of “liberalism”; the relation of contract to promise; the law-literature relationality implied by the argument about relational liberalism; and the place of Victorian relational liberalism in contract vis-à-vis twentieth-century relational contract theory.
