ABSTRACT

Cast iron fountains are prolific across the world. Such a water feature could hardly have been imagined prior to the arrival of cast iron in such remote places. The sophistication and opulence presented in being able to use fresh water for such a purpose was a statement. Cast iron fountains which have been well designed and detailed are remarkably robust. Fountains which have fewer ‘bolt on’ components survive better. Corrosion to fixings and internal surfaces are the primary means of decay to these structures which often warrants or requires complete dismantling.
