Pharmacy and medicine reached new heights of achievement under the Greeks and especially under the Romans. The Greeks provided the West with a humoral theory of health and illness that would persist until germ theory was discovered in the late nineteenth century. Allopathic medicine dominates medical treatment in the world today. Upon graduating from pharmacy or medical schools, pharmacists and physicians take oaths based on the ethical precepts introduced by Hippocrates that they will do no harm to patients and to protect and act in the best interest of their patients. Chiron the Centaur who first mastered the art of pharmacy according to disparate sources including Homer and Pliny. The Temple at Epidaurus resembled a modern spa and had a theater, a stadium, a hotel, gymnasia, and baths surrounded by a peaceful forest. Hiera Picra dates back to the time of the Asclepian temples. The ancient Greeks liked to administer their medicines in confections or electuaries.
