ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 focuses on the technologies used in the early days of the Internet, namely text-based technologies such as email, chat and the many forums and discussion boards that sprung up early in the Internet’s 25+ years of history. Even as a coach using communication methods with a physical or aural presence (telephone, video), it is likely that you will use text to communicate with your client if only from the point of view of logistics. The ten rules of Netiquette, written to help ‘newbies’ acclimatise to using such a vast resource alongside others from all over the world, are discussed.

The chapter also shows you the basic techniques of using keyboard text to indicate intended meaning, which is harder without a tone of voice or physical gesture to ameliorate it.
