The Jews in Nineteenth-Century Egypt: Some Socio-Economic Aspects *

It appears that one of the most neglected areas in research on modern Egypt is its Jewish community. While Egypt's Copts, Italians, and Greeks have been the subject of fairly extensive research, ¹ its Jews have been considered in only one monograph ² and a number of articles, some of them of general interest only. There are two explanations for this vacuum.
