ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a review of South African history. This history includes a discussion of the Dutch and British colonization of the country. The discussion will consider the mayhem and destruction produced by the colonization of the Indigenous people and their land. With the discovery of gold and diamonds, the chapter will examine the “mad scramble” to South Africa that further divided the country along racial lines. This division, which was codified by the apartheid system, is also discussed, along with the long and bloody struggle that overturned the system. Finally, we will examine the nature of post-apartheid South Africa and its crime-related challenges.
