ABSTRACT

This chapter interogates and analyses data collected by the author. It consists of 1130 judgments of the NGT taken from the offical website of the Tribunal.1 The data is solely comprised of reported judgments and excludes daily orders. The data collection is based upon the name of the first named party, plaintiff and defendant, mentioned in the judgment. The period under scrutiny commenced with the first reported judgment, Deepak Kumar Rai v M/S Prabhu Nath Rai Udyog Ltd (Judgment 7 July 2011), and concludes on 30 September 2015. Each case was read, analysed and classified according to the year, parties involved, nature of dispute, benches (principal and regional) and dispute outcome. The data was entered into SPSS software for investigation of frequencies and cross-tabulation. The data in this chapter reflects a proportion of the SPSS files – the database being too voluminous to be attached as an appendix and too detailed to fit within this chapter.2
