ABSTRACT

The chapter provides teaching techniques intended for developing listening skill. The chapter starts with a definition of what is meant by listening and listening comprehension. Included techniques aim at developing the ability to recognize Arabic at the sound, word, memorized chunk, phrase, sentence, paragraph, and extended discourse levels, graded along the three intended proficiency levels: novice, intermediate, and advanced. The chapter includes techniques that are deemed important to focus on listening in isolation, especially at the beginning level, as well as techniques that are useful to integrate, in addition to listening, one or more skills in order to optimize learning and develop language skills in parallel.
